Syneos Health Wins Society for Clinical Research Sites Eagle Award for Fourth Consecutive Year

PortsToronto Receives Canadian Public Relations Society Gold Award of Excellence for Seabin Pilot Program

The CPRS National Awards of Excellence recognize outstanding achievement in a comprehensive public relations and communications project or program, with judging executed by expert panels of leading public relations and communications management practitioners from across the country. The awards were established in 1962 and are considered one of Canada’s most prestigious public relations honours.

The launch of the Seabin Pilot Program, a first in Canada, aimed to reinforce PortsToronto’s role as leaders in sustainability, reduce litter in Toronto’s harbour and encourage behavioural changes amongst the public to reduce reliance on single-use plastics. American Chemical Society’s president comments on award of 2020 Nobel Prize in chemistry

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7, 2020 — On behalf of the American Chemical Society (ACS), President Luis Echegoyen, Ph.D., congratulates today’s winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry: Emmanuelle Charpentier, Ph.D., Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens (Germany) and Jennifer A. Doudna, Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the prize “for the development of a method for genome editing.”

“Today’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry recognizes CRISPR-Cas9, a super-selective and precise gene-editing tool where chemistry plays an incredibly important role,” says Echegoyen. “This discovery, originally derived from a natural defense mechanism in bacteria against viruses, will have untold applications in treating and curing genetic diseases and fighting cancer, as well as impacts on agricultural and other areas. The future for this technique is indeed bright and promising.”

Arkansas Department of Transportation, NIC Arkansas Earn Government Experience Award

IDrive Arkansas recognized for leveraging innovative IT to enhance services and citizen experience

The Center for Digital Government (CDG) awarded the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) a State Project Experience Award for its IDrive Arkansas platform. The IDrive Arkansas platform was developed in partnership with the Information Network of Arkansas (INA) and NIC Arkansas.

ARDOT was one of 10 national winners and was recognized for using the web to radically improve the government experience while innovating how services are delivered.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s award shows why people distrust government

The Duggan administration made national headlines last week, but it wasn’t for anything the Mayor will use in his next “State of the City” address. 

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and his team were named the most secretive publicly funded agency or person in the country by the Investigative Reporters and Editors journalism association, earning its “Golden Padlock” award. 

The group cited the administration’s handling of public documents having to do with Make Your Date, a maternal health organization that worked with the city to fight infant mortality.  

A Free Press investigation in 2019 showed how the administration directed $358,000 in  city grant to Make Your Date and had staff raise money for the nonprofit, which is led by a woman with ties to Duggan. During the course of its investigation, the Free Press learned that the administration had attempted to hide and delete public documents. 

The group’s chair Robert Cribb said the award to the Duggan administration is a reminder of how far city officials will go to protect themselves. 

The Duggan administration blew it off as a mistake or technical error. What some knew then — and was validated last week with the award — was the administration purposely withheld crucial information from the public. 

That’s shameful for an administration that prides itself on protecting the city’s image, works diligently to show that the politics of the past are gone and chastised reporters for their stories on the city’s web site. 

After the city’s Inspector General investigated and found that the administration ordered staffers to delete emails, Chief of Staff Alexis Wiley, Chief Development Officer Ryan Friedrichs and his deputy, Sirene Abou-Chakra were slapped on the wrist. Wiley was given public records training and the two others were ordered training on document management, the Freedom of Information Act and laws about preserving records. Now they have an award from the nation’s largest investigative journalism association.

But the Duggan administration is hardly alone. Its situation is simply the latest of local and national officials who have been criticized for failing to release information to the public.  

Just look at some of the headlines from the last week. 

As news of President Donald Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis unfolded, there was little transparency from the administration. A Saturday morning press conference raised questions about the President’s condition and the timeline of his illness. 

On Sept. 27, the New York Times dropped information about Trump’s taxes, which revealed he paid $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017. The public had been waiting on the records since Trump was on the campaign trail for his first term in office.

Ionis Chief Scientific Officer Frank Bennett receives Lifetime Achievement Award from Oligonucleotide Therapeutics Society

CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 1, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Mary Callery O’Brien honored with Massachusetts Medical Society Grant V. Rodkey Award

Mary Callery O’Brien, MD, assistant professor of medicine, has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society with the 2020 Grant V. Rodkey Award. The beloved teacher was elected by student members of the medical society to receive the award which recognizes a Massachusetts physician for outstanding contributions to medical education and medical students.

“Dr. O’Brien provides me with great feedback that allows me to improve my skills and challenges me to advance my knowledge,” said Nora Feeney, SOM ’21  “I am so grateful that she always makes herself available to answer my questions and takes the time to teach concepts I’ve struggled with in new ways.” 

Dr. O’Brien invited Feeney to join her in teaching a clinical skills session for first-year medical students regarding sexual health history, a further demonstration of O’Brien’s dedication to medical education.

On faculty at UMMS for 23 years, she has been extensively involved in curriculum development and directed School of Medicine courses, most recently, the multidisciplinary Building Working Cells and Tissues course which brings together basic scientists and clinicians to illustrate the “bench to bedside” model of disease pathophysiology.

“Dr. O’Brien is venerated by medical students as a gifted teacher they ‘know and love from day one,’” wrote nominator Michele Pugnaire, MD, professor emeritus of medicine and former senior associate dean for educational affairs. “She is the consummate clinician-educator dedicated to student teaching and exemplifying the values, knowledge and skills of the expert teacher and accomplished primary care physician, fully deserving of the Rodkey Award.”

O’Brien stresses the importance of lifelong learning to all learners, serving as the chair of the Education Committee of the Worcester District Medical Society. In 2015, she received the Lamar Souter Excellence in Undergraduate Medical Education Award, UMass Medical School’s most prestigious award for educators.

A graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, O’Brien completed internal medicine residency at UMMS before joining the faculty. She practices internal medicine in Shrewsbury.

Milo Phillips-Brown receives inaugural MAC3 Society and Ethics in Computing Research Award | MIT News

Milo Phillips-Brown, a postdoc in the ethics of technology in MIT Philosophy, was recently named the inaugural recipient of the MAC3 Society and Ethics in Computing Research Award, which provides support to promising PhD candidates or postdocs conducting interdisciplinary research on the societal and ethical dimensions of computing.

Phillips-Brown is being recognized for his work teaching responsible engineering practices to computer scientists. At MIT, he teaches two courses, 24.131 (Ethics of Technology) and 24.133 (Experiential Ethics), and has been an active participant in the activities of the Social and Ethical Responsibilities of Computing (SERC), a new cross-cutting area in the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing that aims to weave social, ethical, and policy considerations into the teaching, research, and implementation of computing.

“We are delighted to be able to work so closely with Milo,” says Julie Shah, an associate professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, who along with David Kaiser, the Germeshausen Professor of the History of Science and professor of physics, serves as associate dean of SERC. “Over this past spring semester, Milo was a great thought partner in the design of SERC-related materials, including original homework assignments and in-class demonstrations for instructors to embed into a wide variety of courses at MIT,” says Shah.

“We knew we had an exceptional colleague when we selected Milo as our inaugural postdoc. We look forward to collaborating with him and his continued contributions to SERC,” adds Kaiser.

In addition to active learning projects, Phillips-Brown has been working with Shah and Kaiser on preparing the first set of original case studies on social and ethical responsibilities of computing for release in the coming months. Commissioned and curated by SERC, each case study will be brief and appropriate for use in undergraduate instruction and will also be available to the public via MIT’s open access channels.

“I’m thrilled to be the inaugural recipient of the MAC3 Society and Ethics in Computing Research Award. This is a time when we need to be exploring all possible avenues for how to teach MIT students to build technologies ethically, and the award is enabling me to help just do that: work with professors and students across the Institute to develop new models for ethical engineering pedagogy,” says Phillips-Brown.

Phillips-Brown PhD ’19 received his doctorate in philosophy from MIT and his bachelor’s in philosophy from Reed College. He is a research fellow in digital ethics and governance at the Jain Family Institute and a member of the Society for Philosophy and Disability. From 2015 to 2018, he directed the Philosophy in an Inclusive Key (PIKSI) Boston, a summer program for undergraduates from underrepresented groups. In January 2021, he will begin an appointment at Oxford University as an associate professor of philosophy in the Faculty of Philosophy and the Department of Computer Science.
